Cubs beat Astros in the ninth
at Chicago 5, Houston 4: Alfonso Soriano drove in Bobby Scales with the winning run in the ninth inning after Cubs closer Kevin Gregg had squandered a four-run lead.
New York 9, at San Francisco 6: Johan Santana wasn’t at his best, giving up 11 hits, but he was good enough to deny Randy Johnson his 299th victory. Johnson also gave up 11 hits and couldn’t get out of the fifth inning.
Philadelphia 8-7, at Washington 5-5: Brett Myers went seven innings in the opener and Raul Ibanez hit three home runs on the day as the Phillies swept, with the second game shortened to 5 1/2 innings because of rain.
at Pittsburgh 7, Colorado 4: Nate McLouth homered, and Andy LaRoche and Delwyn Young each had two hits for the Pirates.
Arizona 12, at Atlanta 0: Max Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings for his first major league win and Chris Snyder hit a grand slam in the ninth.
at Florida 6, Dodgers 3: Juan Pierre couldn’t do it alone.
