Coach receives penalty

New Mexico Coach Mike Locksley won’t be on the sidelines when the Lobos play Nevada Las Vegas this month, part of a 10-day suspension issued Tuesday as punishment for his role in a fight with an assistant coach.

Locksley initially had been reprimanded. Athletic Director Paul Krebs said during a news conference the coach won’t be allowed to have any contact with the team until Oct. 25, one day after Las Vegas visits Albuquerque. The Lobos do not play this week.

Tuesday night game

Frank Goodin rushed for 97 yards and Louisiana Monroe forced three turnovers to beat Arkansas State, 16-10, in Monroe, La. The Warhawks (4-2, 3-0 Sun Belt) have won three games in a row for their longest conference winning streak since 1992. It also was their best start to a season since the first year in Division I-A (Football Bowl Subdivision) in 1993. Arkansas State (1-4, 0-2) has lost four games in a row.

More suspensions

New Mexico State running back Marquell Colston has been suspended after being charged with battery against a household member, a third-degree felony, after a fight with his live-in girlfriend. Colston was jailed on $10,000 bond. He cannot participate in team activities while the matter is reviewed by a school misconduct committee. . . . Nevada has suspended starting offensive tackle Mike Gallett for the rest of the season for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Bryant apologizes

Oklahoma State has asked the NCAA to consider what it calls “unique circumstances” and hand down a lighter punishment to receiver Dez Bryant. The All-American has been ruled ineligible for lying to the NCAA about a meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders.

According to a reinstatement request from the university released after an open records request by the Associated Press, Bryant sent the NCAA a written apology stating that he “panicked because I was scared and afraid that I was in some kind of trouble.”

Alabama appeals

Alabama contends the NCAA wrongly forced the football program to vacate 21 victories, describing it as an “unprecedented penalty” in cases involving abuse of free textbooks. The university, in a 14-page rebuttal, spelled out several reasons why the wins should be restored, including the NCAA committee on infraction’s improper citing of Alabama’s repeat-offender status.

Injury update

Iowa wide receiver and kick returner Paul Chaney Jr. will sit out the rest of the season after injuring an anterior cruciate ligament in a knee.
