Jerzy Siewierski out indefinitely with foot problem

UCLA defensive tackle Jerzy Siewierski is out indefinitely with plantar fasciitis -- irritation and swelling -- in his right foot.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Siewierski, who injured the foot during practice Wednesday. “I was running along and felt something pop. I thought my shoe broke.”

UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel said a timetable for Siewierski’s return “can be anywhere from days to weeks.”

Siewierski has started every game and has 26 tackles, second among defensive linemen.

Senior Jess Ward spent practice with the first-team defense and is expected to start at defensive tackle when the Bruins face Oregon State on Saturday. David Carter and Justin Edison, who has appeared in only one game this season, will come off the bench.

“It means the next guy has to step up,” Neuheisel said. “Jess Ward has to become a big-time guy in there, as well as Justin Edison and David Carter.”

Andy Keane will also be pushed into duty.

Lineman commits

Kody Innes, an offensive lineman from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro High, says he will attend UCLA next year.

Innes, who is 6 feet 5, 280 pounds, is ranked 51st nationally at his position by Rivals.com. He is the second offensive lineman to commit to UCLA this month, joining Santa Ana Mater Dei’s Chris Ward.

“I really have a lot of confidence in the coaching staff and I know they will be able to bring this program back,” Innes said. “It’s the right choice for me, both for football and academics.”

Innes said that his family probably will be moving to California.

“It’s a great location and the combination of the academics, the alumni connections and having a chance to play, was what sold me,” Innes said. “I can’t wait to get there and help.”

Quick hits

Wide receiver Taylor Embree (concussion) will undergo tests today. If he passes, he will be available for Saturday’s game. . . . Ryan Taylor will start at right guard after working with the first-team offense Thursday. . . . In the last three games, UCLA’s defense has scored as many touchdowns -- two -- as the offense. UCLA’s offense has gone without a touchdown in two of the last three games. . . . The Bruins last lost five games in a row in one season at the end of 2003. They also lost the 2004 opener.
