Bottom 10

Routed, 14-13, by Brigham Young, Oklahoma had its record fall to 0-2 to earn the honor of worst team in America.

The Sooners took advantage of the fact that the Bottom 10’s complex rankings include January bowl results such as Oklahoma’s 24-14 loss to Florida in the BCS title game. The Sooners are the losingest team in the nation.

Meanwhile, No. 2 San Jose State somehow blew a 3-0 lead to succumb to USC and child quarterback Matt Barkley, 56-3. The victory was only a minor consolation for Trojans rooters, after the other men of Troy (Ala.) were knocked off, 31-14, by Bowling Green.

Bottom 10 voters, respectful of Michigan’s 3-9 record last year, shrugged off the (very) hard-working Wolverines’ win over Western Michigan as a fluke and gave Michigan probationary status in the ratings at No. 19.

Also, in what sounded like a barroom brawl, Bill & Mary throttled Virginia, 26-14. Just wait until Virginia’s boyfriend, Duke, finds out.

The rankled:

Others receiving votes (in alphabetical order): None.

*2009 record includes Jan. 8 BCS championship loss to Florida.

Crummy game of the week: Idaho State (0-1) vs. Oklahoma (0-1).

Rout of the week: USC (1-0) over Ohio State (1-0).

Special citation: No doubt part of the reason Brigham Young was successful against Oklahoma was the team’s maturity. As ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd pointed out, 43 of Brigham Young’s players are married. Just think, 43 husbands with an excuse to get out of yardwork on Saturdays.
