Wire reports

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Chris Jakubauskas was put on the 15-day disabled list because of a concussion and head bruise after he was struck in the head by a line drive in Saturday’s game at Houston.

The Pirates recalled left-hander Brian Burres from triple-A Indianapolis before Sunday’s series finale and also purchased the contract of right-hander Brian Bass.

Jakubauskas, a La Verne Damien High graduate, left in the first inning after Lance Berkman’s line drive hit him in the head, behind his right ear. He was carted off the field and taken to a hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation.

A hospital spokeswoman said Jakubauskas was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Colorado Rockies president Keli McGregor was remembered as a devoted father and husband and a one-of-a-kind chief executive during an emotional memorial service at Coors Field in Denver.

The entire team, along with members of the organization, joined family and friends in the stands for the tribute to McGregor, 48, who died unexpectedly last week. He was found unconscious in a hotel room in Salt Lake City on Tuesday and later pronounced dead. Police have said there were no signs of foul play and the medical examiner’s office has assumed the investigation of his death.

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez has started playing in extended spring training games and could rejoin the big league club as early as mid-May.
