Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez hurt in batting practice

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was pulled from Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox after he was hit in the leg by a ball during batting practice.

Rodriguez was fielding balls near third base at Yankee Stadium when he was struck by a grounder hit by Lance Berkman.

“He was scratched with a contusion on his lower left leg and underwent X-rays which were negative,” Yankees spokesman Jason Latimer wrote in an e-mail.

There was no decision on when he would play again, Latimer said.

Rodriguez was replaced at third base by Ramiro Pena.

Etc.

The banged-up Red Sox signed free-agent slugger Carlos Delgado to a minor league contract.

The 38-year-old Delgado has not played in the majors since May 2009, when he was with the New York Mets. He has had two hip surgeries since then.

Delgado is set to report to triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) on Sunday. He played winter ball in Puerto Rico during the off-season before hip problems slowed him.

Delgado has 473 home runs in his career.

The Tampa Bay Rays activated right-hander Andy Sonnanstine from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Dale Thayer to triple-A Durham (N.C.).

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated catcher Ryan Doumit from the disabled list and sent catcher Erik Kratz to triple-A Indianapolis.

The New York Mets recalled outfielder Fernando Martinez and infielder Ruben Tejada, two of the their top prospects, before Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The two players were summoned from triple-A Buffalo (N.Y.). To make room, outfielder Jesus Feliciano was sent down to Buffalo and infielder Alex Cora was released.
