Florida Marlins left fielder Chris Coghlan had surgery on his left knee Wednesday and is beginning rehabilitation after he was hurt during a victory celebration.

The reigning National League rookie of the year had surgery on a torn meniscus; the procedure was performed by medical director Dr. Lee Kaplan in Miami. Coghlan is scheduled to begin rehab immediately.

Edwin Rodriguez, the Marlins’ interim manager, said the team hoped Coghlan would respond well enough to play late this season, but he wasn’t counting on it.

Coghlan hurt himself July 25 delivering a celebratory shaving cream pie to the face of teammate Wes Helms after a game-winning hit against Atlanta. He was hitting .268 with five home runs and 28 runs batted in in 91 games, after hitting .321 last season.

His father-in-law was in a hospital with a scrape on his face and a bump on his head.

“There was an incident at the ballpark between Francisco Rodriguez and his family,” Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said. The team referred questions about the incident to police.
