Jerry Van Dyke: Another Van Dyke comedian

Dick Van Dyke isn’t the only funny guy in the family. Younger brother Jerry, 79, is a popular stand-up comic and actor who earned four Emmy nominations as the loopy assistant college football coach Luther Van Dam in the 1989-97 ABC sitcom “Coach.”

Jerry Van Dyke began honing his stand-up comedy skills while still in high school. After guest starring as Rob Petrie’s brother on “‘ The Dick Van Dyke Show” and appearing on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” he was hired as a regular on the 1963-64 CBS musical variety series “The Judy Garland Show.”

There were a few missteps along the way. He turned down the role of Gilligan on “Gilligan’s Island” and decided not to replace Don Knotts on “The Andy Griffith Show,” opting to star in the notoriously awful 1965-66 NBC sitcom “My Mother the Car.”

Van Dyke continues to make TV appearances, popping up on such sitcoms as “Yes, Dear” and “My Name Is Earl.”
