Ronald Belisario works out at Dodger Stadium

Share

Ronald Belisario started to work out at Dodger Stadium on Monday, nearly three weeks after he was put on the restricted list to reportedly undergo treatment in a substance-abuse program.

The Dodgers said in a statement that Belisario was still on the restricted list and that no timetable has been set for his return.

The reliever’s absence was never explained by the Dodgers or Belisario’s agent, Paul Kinzer.

The Dodgers said Monday that they would not comment on Belisario.

Kinzer also declined to offer information about his client’s whereabouts over the last few weeks.

“I’m sorry about that,” Kinzer said. “This is one case where I have to respect Ronald’s privacy.”

Asked to confirm or deny a report in The Times that Belisario was in a substance-abuse program, Kinzer said, “I don’t have any comment at all. Ronald’s had some personal issues he’s dealing with.”

Belisario, 27, was arrested in Pasadena in June 2009 on suspicion of driving under the influence. He pleaded guilty to a lesser non-alcohol reckless driving charge in March and was ordered to complete a drug and alcohol education program and pay a $1,000 fine by Sept. 8.

Kershaw drops appeal

Left-hander Clayton Kershaw has dropped his appeal and will begin serving his five-game suspension Tuesday.

The suspension is not a huge deal; it simply pushes his next scheduled start back one day, to Sunday against the Giants in San Francisco.

Kershaw was suspended for hitting Giants center fielder Aaron Rowand with a pitch in a game last week at Dodger Stadium.

Umpires deemed the pitch intentional and in retaliation for Matt Kemp’s being hit by a pitch earlier in the game.

Kershaw last started Sunday and threw eight scoreless innings against the New York Mets.

Minor league player suspended

Dodgers minor league outfielder Prentice Redman received a 100-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine.

The suspension is the second of the season for the 30-year-old Redman, who is serving a 50-game suspension for previously testing positive for an amphetamine. The 100-game suspension will go into effect when Redman completes his 50-game suspension.

Redman, who played 15 games for the Mets in 2003, was hitting .332 with 10 home runs and 41 runs batted in for triple-A Albuquerque when the first suspension was handed down June 25.
