Agoura falls short of title

Agoura had a fairy-tale season, but Inglewood had the storybook ending.

After Agoura claimed the Marmonte League title and made it to the Southern Section championship for the first time in the school’s history -- with a perfect 29-0 record -- Inglewood played the role of big, bad spoiler.

Inglewood (27-5) upset top-seeded Agoura, 64-49, in the Division 3AA girls’ basketball title game Saturday at Long Beach State.

After taking a 25-22 lead into halftime, Inglewood outscored the Chargers 13-7 in the third quarter and 26-20 in the fourth.

The Chargers closed to within four points early in the fourth, but Inglewood regained control and held on.

Hazel Ramirez led Inglewood with 19 points.

Brittany Oster had 19 points for Agoura (29-1).

Inglewood won its first Southern Section title in its second championship-game appearance. It lost to Foothill in last year’s Division 3A title game.

In other girls’ games Saturday at Long Beach State:

Brea Olinda 63, Villa Park 38: Senior guard Kelsey Harris scored a game-high 23 points, lifting top-seeded Brea Olinda to the Division 2AA title.

It is the Wildcats’ second consecutive Southern Section championship.

Villa Park got 10 points from Nicole Ballestero.

Santa Maria St. Joseph 54, Los Angeles Windward 41: Kelsi English and Heather Madrigal had 12 points apiece, and Alyson Beebe scored 11 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lift St. Joseph to the Division 4A title.

It is the second consecutive title for the Knights, who won the Division 5AA championship last year.

Windward got 15 points from Courtney Jaco.

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 58, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 54: Seniors Nicole Hung and Nicole Nesbit had 16 points apiece to lift top-seeded Harvard-Westlake to the Division 4AA title.

It is the second title in a row for the Wolverines, who won the Division 4A championship last year.

Bishop Montgomery got 14 points from Kristen Ale.

Long Beach Poly 58, Corona Santiago 38: Senior guard Brittany Wilson had 14 pointsto lift top-seeded Long Beach Poly to the 1AA Division title. The Jackrabbits last won the title in 2008. Corona Santiago got 15 points from Jasmine Lister.
