Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament

MEN

Quarterfinals, Thursday

at Staples Center

Oregon OR Washington State vs. No. 1 California (21-9), 2:30 p.m.— Cal is top-seeded for the first time after winning a conference title outright for the first time in 50 years. Senior guard Jerome Randle, the Pac-10 player of the year, averages 18.7 points. Senior guard Patrick Christopher (16.0 points a game) also was selected first-team all-conference and forwards Theo Robertson (13.8) and Jamal Boykin (11.7) made the second team. Cal swept Oregon/Washington State during the regular season.

No. 3 Washington (21-9) vs. No. 6 Oregon State (14-16), 6 p.m.— Washington forward Quincy Pondexter, who is averaging 20.2 points, was the Pac-10 player of the week a record five times. He and sophomore guard Isaiah Thomas (17.2) are first-team All-Pac-10 players for a team riding a four-game winning streak. Oregon State guard Calvin Haynes (12.7) is the Beavers’ top scorer and senior forward Seth Tarver (10.4) was the Pac-10’s defensive player of the year. Washington beat Oregon State twice this season, by six and 12 points,

No. 2 Arizona State (22-9) vs. No. 7 Stanford (13-17), 8:30 p.m.— Many thought that Arizona State would falter after last season’s tournament run, but all-conference guard Ty Abbott, who is averaging 12.0 points, and guard Derek Glasser (10.2) have led the Sun Devils. Stanford must also contain Arizona State center Eric Boateng, who was 11-for-11 and three-for-three shooting in two victories against the Cardinal this season. Senior swingman Landry Fields (22.0) and sophomore guard Jeremy Green (16.9) lead Stanford, which finished the season with three consecutive losses, including one to Arizona State.
