Tomlinson says Favre didn’t give him a clue

Brett Favre kept his plans to himself, even as he helped try to recruit LaDainian Tomlinson to play for the Minnesota Vikings.

Tomlinson, who signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets on Sunday, said the quarterback gave no indication whether he’d return for a 20th season when they chatted about the Vikings last week.

“I would’ve thought that I might get a little bit of a kind of hint of what he was thinking, but no, he didn’t,” Tomlinson said on a conference call Tuesday. “He didn’t give me a clue at all what he was thinking.”

An attorney for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says the two-time Super Bowl winner has yet to meet with Georgia authorities who are investigating a sexual assault allegation made against him by a 20-year-old college student.

The NFL chose two new co-chairmen — and a new name — for its committee on concussions. Dr. Hunt Batjer and Dr. Richard Ellenbogen will lead what now will be called the NFL head, neck and spine medical committee, the league said Tuesday. The panel used to be called the NFL mild traumatic brain injury committee.

The Seattle Seahawks have traded pass-rushing defensive end Darryl Tapp to Philadelphia for defensive end Chris Clemons and the Eagles’ fourth-round choice in next month’s draft. ... The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent left guard Ryan Lilja, a 59-game starter for the Indianapolis Colts who was claimed off waivers from Kansas City in 2004.

Luger’s family to get insurance settlement

The family of the Georgian luger who died in a training crash on the Olympic track hours before the Vancouver Games formally opened last month will receive an undisclosed insurance settlement.

Vancouver organizing officials say Nodar Kumaritashvili’s family qualifies for a death benefit. VANOC took out insurance on the approximately 5,000 members of the Olympic family, including athletes, for the Games.

It’s unknown when Kumaritashvili’s parents will receive the money.

The International Luge Federation already has donated about $14,000 to the family, and other private fundraising efforts are under way for Kumaritashvili’s survivors as well.

Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette will be allowed to perform an exhibition program in tribute to her mother, Canadian figure skating officials said.

Mackey wins

Iditarod again

Lance Mackey has won the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, becoming the only musher in the 38-year history of the Iditarod to win four consecutive races. Mackey was cheered by fans bundled up against subzero temperatures to welcome the 39-year-old throat cancer survivor as his team coasted up the main street of Nome, Alaska. For winning, Mackey gets a new Dodge truck and $50,400.

Former Dodgers center fielder Willie Davis was celebrated as a captivating ballplayer, fun-loving personality and inspirational father during a one-hour memorial at the Stadium Club at Dodger Stadium.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and former owner Peter O’Malley were on hand to eulogize the L.A. Dodgers’ all-time hit leader and three-time Gold Glove winner, as were a number of ex-teammates including Maury Wills, Tommy Davis and Lou Johnson. Davis died March 9.

John Smoltz is embarking on a career as an analyst for Turner Broadcasting and the MLB Network, although the 42-year-old is not quite ready to say he’s thrown his final major league pitch. ... Ohio State has added two more years to football Coach Jim Tressel’s contract , through the 2014 season. ... Katie Smith, the third-leading scorer in WNBA history, has signed with the Washington Mystics. Smith helped the Detroit Shock win two championships and was the MVP of the 2008 finals. ... Boise State football player Jason Robinson, suspended from the team earlier this month, has been arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery. Robinson, from L.A. University High, posted a $5,000 bond and was released Monday.
