Seattle Mariners 12, Angels 6

AT THE PLATE: Torii Hunter had two hits and drove in his first two runs of the spring while Kendry Morales had two RBIs, giving him a share of the team lead with nine. He’s also hitting .414. Maicer Izturis had a pair of hits, scoring one run and driving in another, to raise his average to .379.

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver said he had some success with a pair of pitches he’s working on, a two-seam fastball and what he calls a “cutter/slider,” something new Angel Joel Pineiro is helping him master. “It’s just a matter of getting a feel for it,” Weaver said. “And seeing what you can do with it and what you can’t. When I throw it good, it’s a great pitch.” He got four outs with it Sunday, but the rest of his 82-pitch outing didn’t go as well, with the Mariners raking him for six runs and eight hits. Relievers Fernando Rodney and Kevin Jepsen did much better in their second Cactus League appearances, throwing a scoreless inning each. Rodney did allow two hits for the second time, loading the bases before getting the final out.

EXTRA BASES: Michael Ryan, who probably won’t make the team despite the fact he’s having the best spring of any Angel, doubled in a run and scored in his only at-bat. “He keeps having good at-bat after good at-bat,” Manager Mike Scioscia said of Ryan, who is hitting .409. “He’s just had a terrific spring.” The Angels pounded out at least 10 hits for the fourth game in a row.

UP NEXT: Joe Saunders will meet a split Dodgers squad on the road at Camelback Ranch. With the Dodgers sending Clayton Kershaw on the road to face the Brewers, Carlos Monasterios is expected to start for the Dodgers in the 1 p.m. game.
