Three people involved in a three-vehicle collision on the eastbound 101 Freeway in Sherman Oaks early Sunday were killed in a second crash after they exited their cars, authorities said.

The three cars crashed west of Coldwater Canyon Boulevard on the eastbound 101 Freeway around 2 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said. The three center lanes of traffic were blocked by the wrecked vehicles, authorities said.

Three male drivers and one female passenger got out of the cars shortly after the crash and were about to exchange information when a 2000 BMW crashed into the cars, killing two of the men and the female passenger, CHP officials said. The driver of one of the vehicles, identified by the CHP as Sun Valley resident Antulio Aju, 30, escaped the second collision by fleeing toward the right shoulder.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office identified the deceased as Santiago Vasquez, 24, of Hawthorne; Neil Hillan, 47, of North Hollywood; and Norma Najera-Villeda, 41, of Inglewood.

Haik Madoyan, 25, of Glendale, who was driving the BMW, suffered moderate injuries. He was detained by officers, but CHP officials did not say why.

Details about what led to both collisions were still under investigation, the CHP said.
