For Monday night opponents Jacksonville and Tennessee, consistency is the issue

Share

As AFC South rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans know each other very well.

Question is, how well do they know themselves?

When the Jaguars play host to the Titans on Monday night, which Jacksonville quarterback will show up? In the Jaguars’ three victories, David Garrard had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 8-1, but in his team’s two losses that ratio was 1-5.

Are the Jaguars the team that scored three points in a home loss to Philadelphia, or the one that scored 31 on the same field the next week in a victory over Indianapolis?

For an idea of the Titans’ consistency problems, look at their win-loss pattern this season: win, loss, win, loss, win. Vince Young looks like an elite quarterback one week, a clipboard holder the next.

In last week’s victory at Dallas, the Titans were crisp and disciplined, with just four penalties. That, after entering the game with the most penalties in the NFL.

These teams have learned to take the good with the bad, and, accordingly, the clubs entered Week 6 tied for first place in the division — and tied for last.

The AFC South is the only division that came into the weekend with all four teams holding identical records. Each was 3-2.

“I’m not really too worried about the division,” Young told reporters last week. “You’ve got to respect the division. You’ve got to win [those] games. But I look at it as another game, trying to get another victory.”

The Jaguars will try to exploit a Tennessee defense ranked 27th against the pass. In their last three games, the Titans have given up 1,042 yards passing.

In his last two games, Garrard has completed 33 of 42 for 341 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. And last October, Garrard nearly matched that in one game against Tennessee, throwing for 323 yards and three touchdowns.

The Titans will look for big production from running back Chris Johnson, who came into Week 6 ranked second in rushing with 485 yards in 113 carries, an average of 4.3 per carry.
