Brett Favre won’t talk about allegations

Brett Favre doesn’t want to talk about any subject but the Green Bay Packers, while the NFL is seeking more information about allegations he sent suggestive messages and lewd photos in 2008 to a woman who worked for the New York Jets.

Speaking on a conference call with reporters in Green Bay ahead of Sunday night’s Minnesota Vikings-Packers game, Favre called the NFL’s investigation into his alleged behavior a “league matter.”

Minutes later, he declined to answer a series of questions about the situation in his weekly Wednesday news conference with Minnesota media.

“That’s a league issue,” Favre said, “that I just have to leave at that.”

Steelers’ Harrison sits out practice

Unhappy Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was excused from practice after meeting with Coach Mike Tomlin about the $75,000 fine Harrison incurred for a helmet hit on a Cleveland Browns receiver. Tomlin felt Harrison needed time to cool off.

Harrison was so upset with the fine — and the NFL’s stricter enforcement of dangerous hits — that he said he was weighing retirement, although Tomlin expects him to practice Thursday.

“I thought it was beneficial for him and for us if I gave him a little time to cool off and give him the day off,” Tomlin said. “I excused him at that time and we went on and had a productive day. I’m sure he will be back in the building tomorrow.”

Raiders unsure about quarterback

Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable may wait until Sunday to select a starting quarterback for that day’s game at Denver.

With starter Bruce Gradkowski limited because of a sore throwing shoulder, backups Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller split reps in practice and even punter Shane Lechler took a handful of snaps with Oakland’s starting offense.

Campbell, who began the season as Oakland’s starter before being benched at halftime in Week 2 against St. Louis, has a sore left knee that was injured in the Raiders’ 17-9 loss to San Francisco on Sunday. It was the worst performance of Campbell’s career.

Colts suspend punter

Punter Pat McAfee was suspended for one game by the Indianapolis Colts after being arrested Wednesday on suspicion of public intoxication.

Police said McAfee took a predawn swim in a city canal and told them “I am drunk,” as he tried to explain why he was sopping wet in the Broad Ripple neighborhood, a trendy area known for its nightlife.

Kolb to start for Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid said that Kevin Kolb will start at quarterback Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

It will be the third consecutive start for Kolb since Michael Vick suffered a rib injury in the Eagles’ loss to Washington on Oct. 3.

Reid also said receiver DeSean Jackson will not play against the Titans after suffering a concussion when he absorbed a hit from Atlanta cornerback Dunta Robinson.

NFL removes photos

The NFL has taken down photos that were for sale of illegal hits that earned players large fines.

An outside vendor used an automated process to post pictures online for fans to buy, but the system will be changed, the league said, to prevent photos of illegal hits from appearing in the future.

Etc.

The San Diego Chargers signed kicker Kris Brown, a sign that Nate Kaeding won’t be able to kick Sunday against the New England Patriots. Kaeding injured his groin Sunday in the Chargers’ 20-17 loss at St. Louis. To make room on the roster, the Chargers released third-string quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan. … Vikings tight end Jim Kleinsasser has a groin injury that kept him from practicing. … The Colts put safety Brandon King on injured reserve and re-signed tight end Gijon Robinson. … The Browns put defensive end Robaire Smith and offensive right tackle Tony Pashos on injured reserve.
