California Cup spotlights Cal-bred horses in final weekend of Oak Tree meeting
Horses bred in California will get their moment in the spotlight Saturday when the California Cup takes place during the Oak Tree meeting at Hollywood Park. There will be seven stakes races featuring purses totaling $700,000 on a 10-race program restricted to California-breds. Post time is 1 p.m.
Enriched, a half brother to the California champion Lava Man, heads the field in the richest race of the day, the $150,000 California Cup Classic at 1 1/8 miles. Lava Man won the Hollywood Gold Cup three times but couldn’t win the Classic in two appearances.
Enriched, a 5-year-old gelding trained by Doug O’Neill, won the Grade II Del Mar Mile Handicap on Aug. 28.
The Classic will be run as the ninth race on the card.
Among the other stakes races, the $100,000 California Cup Mile will feature Liberian Freighter and Bruce’s Dream, and the $100,000 California Cup Sprint will have Cost Of Freedom, who has earned $692,263 and was considered for next weekend’s Breeders’ Cup.
The Oak Tree meeting will end Sunday, with Hollywood Park’s autumn meeting starting Thursday night and running through Dec. 19.
