Red Sox’s Dustin Pedroia might have season-ending surgery

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is bracing for the possibility of having season-ending surgery on his broken left foot.

Pedroia will have a CT scan on Friday. He says if the exam doesn’t show sufficient healing, he will have a screw put in his foot.

The injury originally occurred in late June. Pedroia returned for two games in August, then went back on the 15-day disabled list. He and the Red Sox hoped for his return this month, but his recovery hasn’t gone as swiftly as anticipated.

By having surgery now, Pedroia would be able to get a jump on his off-season workouts.

Pedroia is batting .288 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs in 75 games this season.

Marlins’ Baker to have surgery

Florida Marlins catcher John Baker is headed for reconstructive elbow surgery Friday.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday that Baker, who has not played since May 12, will undergo a procedure to repair a damaged ligament in his right elbow.

Dr. James Andrews is scheduled to perform the reconstructive surgery, according to the newspaper.

A fourth-round pick of Oakland in the 2002 draft, Baker was limited to 23 games this year, during which he batted .218 with three doubles and six RBIs.

In other Marlins injury news, reserve infielder Donnie Murphy had surgery Thursday to repair a dislocated right wrist. He sustained the injury during Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
