Five things to watch this week in college football

Share

1. Boise State, fresh off Virginia Tech’s crushing loss to James Madison, tries to keep its national title hopes alive with a dangerous trip to Laramie to face Wyoming. Broncos Coach Chris Petersen feared this game almost as much as the season opener against Virginia Tech.

2. Florida at Tennessee should be a good measuring stick for how good Oregon is this year. The Ducks just left Neyland Stadium with a 48-13 victory over the Volunteers, so it will be interesting to see what kind of number No. 10 Florida can post.

3. Has anybody been watching California? The Bears have never much liked the limelight, performing best when the expectations are lower. After trouncing Sacramento State and Colorado, though, Cal appears loaded with an interesting Friday night trip to Nevada.

4. An opening loss at Brigham Young took Washington quarterback Jake Locker out of the early Heisman Trophy race, but he might get back in contention if he can lead the Huskies to an upset win over No. 8 Nebraska in Seattle.

5. Everyone is handing the Big Ten title to Ohio State, but watch out for Iowa, impressive in two early wins. This week’s trip to Arizona should be a key indicator against Wildcats’ coach and Iowa graduate, Mike Stoops. Arizona played the Hawkeyes to a 27-17 loss last year in Iowa City.
