Flatiron Books will publish “The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks,” a novel based on the TV series, the publisher announced Thursday. The book will tie together the first iteration of “Twin Peaks” with its upcoming return on Showtime.

The original show, which broadcast two seasons on ABC in 1990-91, is a cult favorite. Directed and co-created by filmmaker David Lynch, it was one of the most iconoclastic, unusual television programs of the decade.

In what was a unique turn at the time, after the series ended it was followed by a theatrically released film, “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.” But still, questions about the mysteries of “Twin Peaks” linger.

The book “The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks” is scheduled to be published in late 2015, before the Showtime sequel arrives in 2016.

The novel will be authored by Mark Frost, co-creator and executive producer of the series, both the original and the upcoming versions.

About the series, Frost told the Times, “We just had a feeling that this was something we created together and the only way we really could see going back to it was if we did it ourselves. We’re really excited that that’s how it turned out because I think that’s the right way to to do it. It’s going to rise or fall on our efforts, and our efforts alone and that’s how it should be judged.”

According to the release from Flatiron Books, Frost’s novel “reveals what has happened to the people of that iconic fictional town since we last saw them 25 years ago and offers a deeper glimpse into the central mystery that was only touched on by the original series.”
