Author events this week: Take a ride with Jon Riddle and Sarah Amelar

Share

Perhaps hoping to follow in the footsteps of Charles Fleming’s bestseller, “Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles,” Jon Riddle and Sarah Amelar are peddling their own recent guidebook, “Where to Bike Los Angeles,” with a bike ride and book signing at Pages Bookstore in Manhattan Beach on Thursday.

The couple, who met in 2005 on a bicycling adventure in Southeast Asia, have been exploring the diverse neighborhoods and landscapes of Los Angeles ever since. Aimed at recreational cycling, the guide features 81 of the most fun and interesting adventures, including 30 kid-friendly outings and paths for beginners from the Westside, Long Beach and the Valleys. With the city adding more bike lanes and paths, there’s never been a better time to check out the area on two wheels.

Amelar, who has a masters of architecture from Yale, and Riddle used a GPS unit to collect data on their treks. In addition to full-color maps, they also highlight altitudes, landmarks, scenic points of interest, the best swimming spots and places to stop for a pick-me-up along the way.
