A 17-year-old was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder in connection with a shooting outside an East Bay gym last week that left one person dead and at least three people, including the suspect, wounded, according to authorities.

The suspect has been charged with one count of murder, and a special allegation called an enhancement, which is for a personal and intentional discharge of a firearm, was added to the count, according to the Contra Costa County district attorney’s office. The suspect is being charged as a juvenile.

The Brentwood Police Department in Northern California arrested the suspect from Brentwood, Calif., on Thursday, the day a fight escalated into a deadly shooting, after positively identifying him as one of the gunmen, Lt. Walter O’Grodnick said. The teen, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, was booked into the Contra Costa County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of murder, police said.

Police confirmed that the man who was killed in the fight was identified by authorities as 21-year-old Cesar Arana from Antioch, Calif.

A second person who was detained Thursday was released from police custody later that day after it was determined he was not a shooter, O’Grodnick said. Detectives are still working on identifying the second shooter and some of the other people who were involved.

Police responded to reports of the shooting about 2 a.m. Thursday in the parking lot of a 24 Hour Fitness in Brentwood. Officers found Arana with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An Arcadia police officer and two other people were injured in the shooting. The officer was undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to his face, a source said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the argument, which involved multiple people, began on or near a basketball court at the gym before moving outside to the parking lot, where it spiraled into a shooting. Surveillance video from 24 Hour Fitness reviewed by officers shows that at least two people were armed and fired multiple shots, striking four victims, one fatally, O’Grodnick said.

Three victims went to hospitals to be treated for gunshot wounds. The investigation later confirmed that one of the three victims was also one of the gunmen, police said. Police did not provide an update on the conditions of the other two victims, but said both were expected to survive their injuries.
