Oscars 2013: ‘Inocente’ wins documentary short

“Inocente,” directed by the team of Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine, won the Oscar for documentary short on Sunday.

The film follows a homeless, undocumented immigrant teenage girl in San Diego as she relentlessly pursues her dream of becoming an artist.

With heart and wit, the film explores the issue of homelessness among youth while also capturing the power of art and ambition. The work aired first on EPIX and later MTV. The filmmakers were previously nominated for their documentary feature “War Dance” in 2007.

The other nominees included:

“King’s Point,” an exploration of a Florida retirement community. The film has its basis in filmmaker Sari Gilman’s time there with her grandmother. In focusing on five residents at the home, Gilman captures the various distinctions in the experience of aging. The film has aired on HBO.

“Mondays at Racine,” which follows two sisters who once a month open their Long Island beauty salon for free services for women undergoing chemotherapy. Co-directed by Robin Honan and Cynthia Wade, the film takes in the diverse issues of dealing with cancer, the impact of survival and the markers of identity. The film has aired on HBO. Wade won the category in 2007 with her short “Freeheld.”

“Open Heart,” which follows the stories of eight Rwandan children with rheumatic heart disease, has won the documentary short Oscar on Sunday. The film from directors Kief Davidson and Cori Shepherd Stern tracks the youngsters’ journey toward receiving treatment in the Sudan. The work has aired on HBO.

“Redemption,” a look at the culture of “canners” in New York City. Filmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew O’Neill focus not only on homeless people who collect cans for the recycling money, but also on the working poor, many of whom pursue canning to make ends meet. The filmmakers were previously nominated in 2009 for their documentary short “China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province.” The film has aired on HBO.

The 85th Academy Awards are being held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday night, in a televised ceremony hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
