Motion Picture Home ranks among California’s best nursing homes

The long-term care facility operated by the Motion Picture & Television Fund, which in previous years faced criticism from nursing home advocates over quality of care issues and staffing levels, got some good news this week.

U.S. News & World Report placed the fund’s nursing home, which caters to entertainment industry workers and was once slated for closure, on its 2013 list of “Best Nursing Homes in California.”

The facility, known as Motion Picture Home, received a five-star rating from U.S. News & World Report for having quality measures and nurse staff levels above state and national averages, the fund announced in a statement.

In the study, nurse staffing levels are judged by the average number of hours per day of care received per resident from nurses and physical therapists. Quality measures are based on the percentage of residents who received recommended care such as flu vaccinations and pain management.

“I can’t tell you how thrilled we are that the hard work put into our patient care by all of our MPTF workers and management is recognized this way by a great organization like U.S. News,” said Bob Beitcher, who has worked to improve the facility’s operations since being named the fund’s chief executive in July 2011. “With the exceptional work of our new management team over the past six months, we are providing our frail and vulnerable industry seniors even better care today.”

Staffing levels have been a source of conflict in protracted contract negotiations with the union representing workers at the Woodland Hills retirement community.

This is U.S. News & World Report’s fifth annual Best Nursing Homes ratings, highlighting the top nursing homes in each state and nearly 100 major metropolitan areas. The ratings cover more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide.
