Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns takes a look at “Prohibition” in a new three-part series. Up first are the efforts of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League to push for a nationwide ban on alcohol. (KOCE, 8 and 9:45 p.m.)

Semper fi? A CIA agent suspects that a Marine, recently returned after eight years as MIA in Iraq, may in fact be an Al Qaeda sleeper agent in the new espionage drama “Homeland.” With Clare Danes and “Life’s” Damian Lewis, below. (Showtime, 10 p.m.)

MONDAY

Boo! Did we scare you? Well, Halloween is less than a month away, so it’s not too soon to get your spooky on. To that grim end, bestselling horror novelist Stephen King talks up his favorite big-screen terror tales on “A Night at the Movies.” (TCM, 5 and 8:30 p.m.)

TUESDAY

From court to court: In the mid-1970s, Renée Richards — formerly a New York ophthalmologist named Richard Raskin — successfully sued for the right to become the first transsexual tennis player to compete in the U.S. Open. The tale of courage and controversy is recounted in the documentary “Renée.” (ESPN, 5 p.m.; ESPN2, 7:30 p.m. Wed.)

WEDNESDAY

It’s an “American Horror Story” — and we’re not talking about the country’s economic woes. Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton and Jessica Lange star in this new supernatural drama from the same folks who brought you “Nip/Tuck” and “Glee.” (FX, 10 p.m.)

THURSDAY

If you don’t look good, he doesn’t look good: The 2010 doc “Vidal Sassoon: The Movie” celebrates the British-born tonsorialist-

terrible who made his rep with wash-and-wear cuts and built a global empire with his hair-care products. (Showtime, 7:30 p.m.)

FRIDAY

What makes the Colonel’s chicken so finger-lickin’ good? Why are those cinnamon buns you find at the mall food court so ooey-gooey addictive? Chef Todd Wilbur tries to crack these and other culinary codes in the new series “Top Secret Recipe.” (CMT, 9 p.m.)

SATURDAY

If ever a wonderful wiz there was: The end is nearly nigh for our boyish, bespectacled hero (Daniel Radcliffe, below) in 2010’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1,” the penultimate entry in the series based on J.K. Rowling’s books. (HBO, 8 p.m.)
