Katy Perry and John Mayer reportedly split again

Katy Perry and John Mayer have flipped their on-off switch to off once again, according to reports out Tuesday saying the couple have split.

Though multiple sources fueled Us Weekly’s story, and People had a source of its own, those voices seem to be saying the breakup might not be as final as all that.

“She’s leaving the window open,” a source told Us. “They have both been so focused on work.”

Indeed, it appears to be work that drove the split, as Mayer’s been readying for a tour after struggling with vocal problems for the better part of two years and the former Mrs. Russell Brand has been working on her third studio album. The two had been dating for about seven months since a brief break in August, People said. They’d dated casually for a bit before that.

Perry tweeted happily about an outing with her man at the beginning of the month, saying, “My boyfriend is taking me to a kitten shelter in his truck. I can’t think of a more perfect Saturday.”

“I don’t feel like I’m in a celebrity relationship,” Mayer told CBS in an interview that aired in February. “For the first time in my life I don’t feel like I’m in a celebrity relationship. I really don’t. ... I’m saying for me it feels like something that’s very human.”

And hey, it’s only human for a boy to give a girl something heart-shaped and sparkly around Valentine’s Day, right? Thing is, when you’re a high-profile duo, the exchange of a ring of any kind tends to get captured in pictures, which tend to spark engagement rumors, as happened with Perry and Mayer last month.

They were, clearly, not engaged — at least not for now.
