Goldenvoice announces Coachella warm-up shows

With Coachella’s expansion to two weeks last year, bands performing at the fest had a brick of spare time on their hands. Many chose to spend it playing officially sanctioned side-gigs -- to the benefit of their performance chops and those fans shut out of buying festival tickets.

Today, Goldenvoice announced that the run-up to Coachella, the interim week and time right afterward will be busy indeed. Across SoCal, many of the marquee artists will play warmup and wind-down gigs in club- and theater-level venues.

Lou Reed, Trent Reznor’s How to Destroy Angels, 2 Chainz, Passion Pit and Vampire Weekend are among those booked for side gigs at venues across L.A. and the Inland Empire. Goldenvoice announced the schedule in a photo tweeted this afternoon.

This year, the slate expands even farther, with a run of Coachella-affiliated shows in San Diego, Ventura and Pioneertown.

Coachella and Goldenvoice are famously strict about their radius clause, which forbids bands from playing in the L.A. area close to showtime. But given the near-instant sellouts every year, organizers may have realized that a few warm-up gigs aren’t a cannibalizing threat, and that they might be moneymakers.
