Video: Rush’s ‘Spirit of Radio’ from HBO’s Rock Hall of Fame show

About 7,000 people were on hand at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre last month when Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the Class of 2013, along with Donna Summer, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Heart, Albert King, Quincy Jones and Lou Adler.

Those who did attend (this reporter included) would testify that there were times when it felt as if roughly 6,950 of those in the audience were fans of the Canadian prog-rock trio.

In any case, starting May 18, the rest of the world can judge for itself as HBO premieres three hours’ worth of highlights from the 5½-hour marathon of music and testimonials to this year’s inductees.

The performers include Rush, Newman (who was joined by the Eagles’ Don Henley), Public Enemy and Heart (with some Foo Fighters) on their own behalf and Jennifer Hudson, Usher, John Mayer with Gary Clark Jr. and Carole King saluting Summer, Jones, King and producer-promoter Adler, respectively.

The evening also brought appearances by actor-activist Harry Belafonte and filmmaker Spike Lee, who delivered the induction speech for Public Enemy.

The show premieres Saturday at 6 p.m. Pacific, 9 p.m. Eastern time. For Rush fans and others who can’t get enough of the event, HBO has programmed a 24-hour marathon on HBO Signature for Sunday starting at midnight.

Pop & Hiss is offering up an exclusive clip of the finale of Rush’s performance of “Spirit of Radio.”
