He was there at the Stonewall riots in 1969, published “The Celluloid Closet” in 1981, and passed away from AIDS in 1990. The life and career of author and gay-rights activist Vito Russo, above, are celebrated in the documentary “Vito.” (HBO, 9 p.m.)

TUESDAY

Take the cannoli … please: The new special “The Godfather Legacy” examines the continuing influence of Francis Ford Coppola’s Mafia trilogy, based on the writings of Mario Puzzo, on film, pop culture and real-life organized crime. (History, 9 p.m.)

WEDNESDAY

It pays to advertise. And sometimes the ads themselves win awards. “The CLIOS: World’s Best Commercials,” hosted by J.B. Smoove, surveys clever and eye-catching spots from around the globe … right after these messages. (NBC, 8 p.m.)

A daylong tribute to the late Ernest Borgnine includes his Oscar-winning performance as a lonely-hearted butcher in the 1955 drama “Marty,” his role as a sadistic sergeant in 1953’s “From Here to Eternity” and his tough-guy turn in the 1969 western “The Wild Bunch.” (TCM, 6, 7:45 and 10 p.m.)

FRIDAY

The opening ceremonies of the “2012 Summer Olympics” take place in London, where hopes are high that host country’s Quidditch team, led by one Harry Potter, will finally bring the gold back to … what do you mean it’s not a real sport? (NBC, 7:30 p.m.)

You can go home again: Four Cuban-born musicians, each of whom pursued careers abroad, share their individual stories while preparing for a joint concert in the island nation’s capital in the documentary “Havana, Havana!” (KOCE, 9 p.m.)

SATURDAY

In “The Philadelphia Experiment,” a Navy ship vanishes during WWII, then reappears mysteriously several decades later. Could this be the original 1984 sci-fi thriller… or just a 2012 remake? We may never know. With Nicholas Lea, below. (Syfy, 9 p.m.)
