Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts star in … Oops, let’s start again. Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard and Phylicia Rashad star in “Steel Magnolias,” a new made-for-cable melodrama based on the stage play and hit 1989 film. (Lifetime, 9 p.m.)

It vexes us when, as happens, “The Simpsons” airs its annual Halloween episode … in November. So this year, we’re less vexed. The animated series takes on the Mayan 2012 prophecy, black holes and time travel in “Treehouse of Horror XXIII.” (Fox, 8 p.m.)

MONDAY

Airing in 12 parts over six consecutive nights, “Titanic: Blood and Steel” is a stem-to-stern-to-iceberg account of the most famous maritime tragedy since the wreck of the Hesperus. Chris Noth, Neve Campbell and Derek Jacobi star. (Encore, 8 and 8:49 p.m.)

TUESDAY

Neil Patrick Harris, above, is horrible with a capital “H” as a would-be supervillain in the belated broadcast debut of Joss Whedon’s web musical “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.” Nathan Fillion and “The Guild’s” Felicia Day also star. (KTLA, 9 p.m.)

With the election looming, the man who would be president — former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — and the man who would continue to be president — Barack Obama — are each profiled in “The Choice 2012” on a new edition of “Frontline.” (KOCE, 9 p.m.)

WEDNESDAY

It don’t mean a thang if it ain’t got that twang: “Friday Night Lights’” Connie Britton is country-music legend Rayna Jaymes, and “Heroes’” Hayden Panettiere is the rising star hot on Rayna’s boot heels, in the new nighttime soap “Nashville.” (ABC, 10 p.m.)

THURSDAY

Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman are … Oops, let’s start again. “Smallville’s” Kristin Kreuk and “Terra Nova’s” Jay Ryan are “Beauty and the Beast” in this new fantasy drama/police procedural based on the late-1980s cult TV series. (KTLA, 9 p.m.)

FRIDAY

Adopted from a shelter by a blended family, a wisecracking, keyboard-clacking canine sets out to chronicle their misadventures in the new sitcom “Dog With a Blog.” What’s next, a cat with its own Facebook page, or a bird that tweets? (Disney, 9:40 p.m.)

SATURDAY

Don’t tell George Clooney to “hang loose.” He’s got a wife in a coma, two hard-to-handle daughters and a decision to make about some family-held beachfront property in Alexander Payne’s Hawaii-set 2011 dramedy “The Descendants.” (HBO, 8 p.m.)
