The holiday spirit is making its way to the red carpet.

We all know Lady Gaga has a penchant for dressing up like a Christmas tree (note the Vera Wang red cocoon jumpsuit and evergreen topper she wore in London on Sunday) but I’m talking about something more subtle and refined.

Exhibit A: The Marchesa green goddess gown that Michelle Obama wore to the Kennedy Center Honors Gala over the weekend looked gorgeous as she walked out of the White House, past the Christmas trees and garlands of pine boughs. The first lady knows her best features, and this style played up her shoulders in an elegant way. The wavy hairstyle was a fun counterpoint.

At the UNICEF Snowflake Ball last week in New York, Katy Perry wore a regal-looking burgundy bias-cut panne velvet racerback gown and a chiffon cape with gold lace applique from Naeem Khan’s Fall 2013 collection. It’s refreshing to see a pop star who feels like she doesn’t have to let it all hang out, or rush the season and wear next spring’s clothes during the dead of winter just because she can.

And even though Julianne Moore wore this look to the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund event back in early November, I have to mention it because I can’t get it out of my mind. The Tom Ford dress fits her like a glove, and the red tile-shaped pailettes seem to glow. What incredible workmanship.
