Portland’s Blue Star Donuts is bringing bourbon doughnuts to Venice

Blue Star Donuts, the Portland shop known for its brioche-style doughnuts, is opening a location on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice this summer.

That means you’ll be able to eat blueberry bourbon basil and Cointreau creme brulee doughnuts in your bathing suit, by the beach.

“With all that’s happening in the food scene in Los Angeles, particularly in the Venice Beach area, it truly felt like the right place for us to settle down and continue to grow the vision behind Blue Star,” said co-owner Katie Poppe in a statement.

The Los Angeles outlet will serve the shop’s signature brioche-style doughnuts, all made with an 18-hour process and a lot of butter. The dough ferments and proofs overnight before a dip in hot rice oil the next day.

Some of their most popular flavors, in addition to the blueberry bourbon basil and the Cointreau creme brulee, include the apple fritter and the original glazed.

Blue Star Donuts will be open daily with doughnuts, Stumptown Roasters coffee and Steve Smith teas.
