Division Finals

BOYS

The four teams that won titles Saturday in the boys’ competition of the Southern Section divisional track and field championships at Cerritos College were overshadowed by senior Lionel Larry of Compton Dominguez.

Spurred on by the disappointment of Dominguez’s top-ranked 1,600-meter relay team being disqualified from the divisional preliminaries May 15 for a uniform violation, Larry won the Division II 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.37 seconds, the 200 in a school-record and Division II meet-record 20.73 and ran a 9.4-second anchor leg on the victorious 400 relay team that clocked 42.13.

Larry’s 200 clocking bettered his previous best of 20.87, was the third-best time in the nation this year and was fourth on the all-time Southern Section list, but he said it was far from a perfect race.

“That was rough,” the defending state 200 champion said. “My [calf muscles] started cramping up. . . . It started after 30 meters. I could feel it cramp a little bit, let go, cramp a little bit, let go. I probably could have pushed a lot harder down the stretch, but I kept cramping up so I just wanted to finish the race.”

Led by the USC-bound Larry, who has won six individual section sprint titles during his career, Dominguez finished second in the Division II team standings with 34 points.

Los Angeles Loyola totaled 42 points to win its second consecutive title.

The Cubs were led by junior Mark Matusak, who finished second in the 1,600 in 4:13.70 and second in the 3,200 in 9:13.29.

Matusak finished behind junior Brandon Bethke of Lake Forest El Toro, who used a strong finishing kick to win the 1,600 in a state-leading time of 4:09.53 and the 3,200 in 9:09.98.

Long Beach Poly, led by senior sprinter Derrick Jones, totaled 55 points to win its fourth consecutive Division I boys’ title. Arroyo Grande placed second with 41 points as it garnered all of its points in the shotput and discus.

Jones placed a disappointing second in the 100 and 200 last year while running with torn ligaments in his left ankle, but he won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.47, the 200 in 21.15 and anchored the victorious 400 relay team to a meet-best 41.84 clocking Saturday.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, led by the winning performances of sophomore Rodney Glass in the 100 and 200, won its second title in three years in the Division III meet while Gardena Serra won its third consecutive Division IV championship.

Serra won four consecutive Division III titles from 1996-99.

GIRLS

It began with a runaway victory in the 400-meter relay and ended with an impressive win in the 1,600 relay.

And in between those first-place finishes, Long Beach Poly performed superbly in the Division I girls’ competition of the Southern Section track and field championships at Cerritos College on Saturday.

Led by sophomore Shana Woods, who totaled 24 1/2 points, and senior Shalonda Solomon, who accounted for 22 1/2, Poly scored 117 points to finish 47 ahead of second-place Long Beach Wilson and win its four consecutive team title.

The defending state champion Jackrabbits suffered a blow when senior Dashanta Harris false-started out of the 100-meter high hurdles, but still produced top-four finishes in 10 of 16 events in the meet in which the top six finishers in each event were awarded points on a 10-8-6-4-2-1 basis.

“We came out her to try to run [personal records] and just run as fast as we could,” Solomon said. “Almost all the girls made it through so we’re still in there [in regards to winning the state championships] so I think we’re going to do real great.”

Solomon, the No. 2-ranked sprinter in the nation last year, won her fourth consecutive Division I titles in the 100 and 200 with wind-aided times of 11.35 seconds and 22.94, respectively, and anchored the Jackrabbits to a winning time of 45.11 in the 400 relay.

Woods won her second consecutive title in the long jump with a wind-aided jump of 20 feet 6 1/4 inches, placed third in the 100 in a wind-aided 11.63 and finished third in the 300 low hurdles in 42.31. She also ran a 53.8-second split on the second leg of the 1,600 relay to help Poly to a winning time of 3:40.39 while running without a resting Solomon, who usually runs the anchor leg for the Jackrabbits.

Ebony Collins performed superbly for Long Beach Wilson, setting a national freshman and age-15 record of 40.81 seconds to win the 300 low hurdles after finishing second in the 100 in a wind-aided 11.49 and second in the 100 high hurdles in a hand-timed 14.0.

Collins’ time in the 300 hurdles, which broke the previous national freshman and age-15 records of 40.99 set by Char Foster of Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic in 1995, moved her into a tie for fifth on the all-time national performer list.

Other schools to win team championships were Riverside North, which won its second consecutive Division II title, Pasadena Muir, which won its second consecutive Division III title, and Gardena Serra and Orange Lutheran, which tied for the Division IV championship.
