A San Bernardino mother and her boyfriend were in jail Friday after the woman’s 3-year-old daughter tested positive for methamphetamine while at a hospital for a fever.

Alexis Parker, 27, and her boyfriend, Tony Medrano, 43, were being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and were scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.

The two were arrested at the Community Hospital of San Bernardino on Wednesday evening after medical staff did an initial checkup of the 3-year-old, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

A toxicology screen showed the girl had methamphetamine in her system, authorities said.

Child services and a sheriff’s deputy went to the hospital and after talking with Parker and Medrano, arrested the pair and took the girl and her twin sister into protective custody.

Medrano is not the children’s father.

Authorities searched the couple’s home and found that the toddlers had access to “several types of narcotics and weapons,” sheriff’s officials said. A search of the car the couple drove to the hospital also turned up drugs under the 3-year-old’s seat, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The couple were booked on suspicion of child endangerment, sale of methamphetamine and possession of dangerous weapons.

Medrano is a sex offender who was convicted in 2003 of a lewd or lascivious act on a 14- or 15-year-old, according to the Megan’s Law website. He was booked on an additional count of a felon possessing ammunition.
