Weekend events commemorate 9/11

Below is a roundup of events taking place this weekend that commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Los Angeles area

Hundreds of religious leaders will gather at 7 p.m. Saturday at Los Angeles City Hall. The names of the Californians who died in the attacks will be read and 500 glass lanterns will be lighted. Open to the public.

The annual Los Angeles Fire Department handball tournament dedicated to the memory of fallen firefighters will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday in Venice Beach.

Evangelist Greg Laurie brings his Harvest Crusade outreach to Dodger Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday and will speak about tragedy. Free, with Spanish and Korean translation and signing for the deaf. https://www.la.harvest.org

Councilman Tom LaBonge will lead a memorial ceremony at 5 p.m. Sunday at North Hollywood Park, 11455 Magnolia Blvd.

A commemoration ceremony and tree planting will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday at The Grove shopping center, 189 The Grove Drive.

Rabbi Marvin Hier will lead a program at 11 a.m. Sunday that honors lives lost on 9/11. Museum of Tolerance rotunda, 9786 W. Pico Blvd.

USC will hold an interfaith community service at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at 835 W. 34th St.

The Beverly Hills Fire Department will unveil its 9/11 Memorial Garden, 445 N. Rexford Drive, at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Police, fire and military personnel will join a remembrance ceremony featuring a 21-rifle volley and helicopter flyover at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center, 1700 Stadium Way.

The Guibord Center offers an interfaith 9/11 memorial at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral, 514 W. Adams Blvd.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is sponsoring a blood-donation campaign during September at various houses of worship. Go to https://www.muslimsforlife.org to find a location near you.

San Fernando Valley area

Shepherd of the Hills in Porter Ranch will place nearly 3,000 flags with 9/11 victims’ photos around its building for viewing both Saturday and Sunday. The church is at 19700 Rinaldi St. https://www.theshepherd.org

Noreen Gree of the L.A. Jewish Symphony has assembled a 9/11 interfaith tribute choir and musical program that will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday at Temple Judea, 5429 Lindley Ave. in Tarzana.

The Northridge Fashion Center will hold a community memorial event from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 9301 Tampa Ave.

Barger Harley-Davidson, 22107 Sherman Way in Canoga Park, will host a fundraiser to honor 9/11 victims and servicemen and women as well as benefit the Veterans Home of California. It’ll run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Los Angeles fire and police officials will conduct a 7 p.m. tribute to first-responders on Sunday at the 9/11 Memorial Fountain in front of Sherman Oaks Fire Station 88, 5101 N. Sepulveda Blvd.

San Gabriel Valley area

The city of Walnut will hold a memorial service at Creekside Park from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. More than 400 crosses will be on display throughout the day to commemorate the public safety officials who lost their lives on 9/11.

Pasadena will dedicate a plaque at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at City Hall in memory of the Hanson family, who were aboard United Flight 175. At 11 a.m., four fighter jets will conduct a flyover while the Pasadena City College marching band plays.

A free outdoor commemoration concert will be held at Pasadena Civic Auditorium at 7 p.m. Sunday at 300 E. Green St. The event will feature selected readings and a presentation of the colors by police and fire officials. https://www.visitpasadena.com

Also Sunday, Rosemead city officials will unveil a public sculpture that incorporates a beam from the World Trade Center. The event begins at noon.

The University of La Verne has a series of 9/11 events scheduled, including panel discussions and a piano concert offering musical meditation. Free and open to the public. https://www.laverne.edu

The annual Patriot Day Ceremony, sponsored by the city of Monterey Park, will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday in front of City Hall. Speeches, patriotic music and a bell-ringing ceremony are scheduled.

Orange County

The city of Anaheim will hold a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Pearson Park Amphitheatre, 401 N. Lemon St.

Interfaith dialogue, conversation and peacemaking is on the schedule for Lumen, an event held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mariners Church in Irvine. https://www.experiencelumen.com

At 7 a.m. Sunday, a pancake breakfast in support of the Orange County Fire Authority Benevolent Assn. will kick off a 5K fundraiser that begins across from the Irvine Spectrum Center.
