Woman suspected of killing her two children in O.C. asks for death penalty
A woman accused of fatally poisoning her two children after luring them to California with the promise of going to Disneyland told an Orange County judge she wanted the death penalty.
During a hearing in Superior Court, Marilyn Edge asked Judge Craig Robison on Tuesday to give her the death penalty when he asked her if she had any objection to having her arraignment postponed, officials from the Orange County district attorney’s office said Wednesday.
The arraignment was pushed back to Oct. 25.
Edge, 42, faces two counts of murder in the deaths of her daughter Faith, 10, and son Jaelen, 13.
Edge, a Scottsdale, Ariz., resident, rammed her vehicle into steel poles behind a Home Depot store in Costa Mesa on Saturday in an apparent attempt to commit suicide, according to police.
There was a propane tank in the car, which she believed would cause her vehicle to explode when she slammed into the metal poles, officials said.
When authorities arrived at the crash scene, the woman tried to strangle herself with an electrical wire, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, spokesman with the Santa Ana Police Department.
After she was extricated, Edge allegedly told officers about the dead children.
Police rushed to the hotel room, on the third floor of a Hampton Inn & Suites in Santa Ana, and found the two bodies, Bertagna said.
The Associated Press reported that Edge’s ex-husband had recently received full custody of their children.
The woman reportedly sent a text message Friday to her former husband, saying that she planned to return the children to Georgia, where he lives.
Edge is being held without bail.
