Motorcyclist hits, kills wild donkey in Riverside County

A motorcyclist in Riverside County collided with a donkey Monday night, killing it, authorities said.

The 35-year-old rider from Moreno Valley was traveling northbound on Reche Canyon Road around 8:45 p.m. when at least one donkey walked out onto the pavement. The motorcyclist, who was going about 60 mph, wasn’t able to brake fast enough and the two collided, according to Travis Monks, a spokesman for the Riverside County California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened north of Stewart Road, an area where packs of wild donkeys live.

“There was more than one on the road,” Monks said about the donkeys that night. “This happens more often than you think on that road.”

Emergency responders took the rider to Loma Linda University Medical Center with minor injuries. The donkey was moved to the side of the road, where it was expected to be removed later Tuesday, Monks said.
