A Los Angeles County Metro Gold Line train hit a car that was on the tracks near Little Tokyo on Tuesday morning, sending the driver to a local hospital and causing delays at the beginning of morning’s rush hour.

The crash occurred about 7 a.m. near 1st Street and Mission Road, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. Firefighters removed the driver, who was taken to a hospital with a hip injury, said Metro control center transportation manager Vic Robertson.

The collision triggered 15- to 20-minute delays on the Gold Line as trains moved to operating on a single track, Robertson said. The delays were only temporary, Robertson said, and the line could be operating back on schedule by 8:30 a.m.

The crash temporarily shut down vehicle traffic on 1st Street near downtown in both directions.

Robertson said it was unclear if the vehicle had stalled on the track or perhaps was struck while making a turn.
