Hathaway fire near Banning slows, 43% contained
The Hathaway wildfire in the San Bernardino National Forest near Banning is now 43% contained and has burned 3,560 acres, officials said.
The fire, which began Sunday, grew little overnight. Just 40 additional acres have been burned since 7 p.m. Thursday, according to a Friday morning update.
Firefighters are continuing to focus their energy on the fire’s east side, which remains the most active, officials said. The terrain there is steep, so workers may need to wait for the flames to burn down to them, said Bob Poole, a public information officer with the San Bernardino National Forest.
Twelve helicopters and six air tankers are assisting crews, according to the statement.
Strong winds are expected Friday afternoon, but Poole said the predicted wind speed is not out of the ordinary for the area.
