Man killed in El Sereno collision with car fleeing LAPD identified

Coroner’s officials on Sunday identified a driver who was killed Saturday afternoon when his car was struck by a suspect fleeing police.
Julio Cesar Reyes-Salvador, 23, of Los Angeles, died in the crash in El Sereno, officials said.
Reyes was stopped at an intersection when a silver Chevrolet Suburban being pursued by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department rammed into three vehicles, crushing Reyes’ car and killing him. The Suburban and another vehicle overturned. Three others were injured in the crash.
Officers had tried to pull over the suspect on suspicion of driving recklessly when he fled, according to police.
A preliminary investigation showed the Suburban was traveling at about 80 miles per hour at the time of the collision, said Dana Bee, a deputy coroner at the L.A. County coroner’s office. Bee said Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
More than a dozen of Reyes’ relatives were gathered at the scene of the crash Saturday night, tearfully awaiting news from authorities. Among them was Reyes’ mother, who at one point was taken by paramedics to a nearby clinic because she was distressed.
Brenda Gil, 18, Reyes’ cousin, said the crushed sedan belonged to Reyes’ father. She said her cousin, a photography student at East L.A. College, had left the house to go out with friends.
“He was a good person. He wasn’t doing anything wrong,” she said, sobbing. “And for a person who didn’t want to stop, he lost his life.”
