Search continues for missing swimmer in Laguna Beach

A search is underway for an 18-year-old Nevada teen who was swept away by a large wave Sunday near Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Beach.

Lifeguards, firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard and a boat from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will continued their search efforts Monday for the male teenager, who was last seen at 1:30 p.m. near a rocky cove.

The boy was with three other high school friends along the rocks when the swell hit him, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.

He hit a rock and was swept into the ocean.

His disappearance prompted an extensive, hours-long search.

“It’s dangerous,” Concialdi said. “There is sneaker waves or rogue waves that just come up.”

The rocky cove, he said, is particularly precarious for inexperienced swimmers.

Years ago, a woman died at the same cove.

Concialdi advised beachgoers to keep their distance from the cove and to use caution.
