The San Bernardino Police Department is mourning the off-duty death of a “highly respected” motor officer who was killed in a crash on the 91 Freeway in Corona.

Officer Shaun Jarvis was riding his personal motorcycle Thursday in the carpool lane of the westbound 91 Freeway when he was struck by a vehicle attempting to merge into the lane, authorities said.

Jarvis, who was off-duty at the time, was ejected from his motorcycle into the eastbound carpool lane and hit by another vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

San Bernardino Police Lt. Rich Lawhead said Jarvis had been with the department since June 2006 and was currently working for the traffic division.

“He was a highly respected officer and worked assignments in patrol and on the crime impact team,” Lawhead said.

All drivers involved in the incident gave full statements and are cooperating with the investigation, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Monks said. The investigation into who was at fault remained ongoing, he added.

Jarvis is survived by his wife, Rachel, and their children, according to the police department. Funeral arrangements were pending.
