Palmdale student struck and killed Monday by SUV is identified
The pedestrian struck and killed by an SUV on Monday in Palmdale was a 16-year-old student who said goodbye to her boyfriend moments before she was hit, according to authorities.
Elvia Alvarez was struck by a Ford Flex as she crossed the roadway near 30th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard about 10 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy John Herald. Alvarez was walking home at the time, he added.
Alvarez was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, but the intersection has street lights, Herald said.
“They didn’t see each other,” Herald said of Alvarez and the driver.
The driver, who was not identified, stayed at the scene as an off-duty nurse administered CPR to Alvarez before deputies arrived.
“The guy that hit her was broken up,” Herald. “It’s tragic for everyone.”
Alvarez was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Neither speed nor alcohol played a factor into the incident, Herald said. The speed limit on the road where Alvarez was hit is 50 mph, he added.
