The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a female cruise ship passenger who is believed to have gone overboard about 750 miles off the coast of Hawaii.

The woman, who is believed to be a 54-year-old American, was reported missing from a Princess Cruises ship about 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to Coast Guard spokeswoman Melissa McKenzie.

At that point, the ship reversed course to look for the woman and the Coast Guard sent search-and-rescue teams to the area.

Coast Guard crews scoured the sea all night and morning, McKenzie said. On Thursday, the U.S. Navy joined the effort, she said.

The woman was last seen at 12 p.m. Wednesday. The ship, which departed from San Francisco, was about 750 miles northeast of Hilo, Hawaii.
