Richmond teen with loaded Uzi submachine gun is arrested, cops say

A 15-year-old Northern California boy who allegedly pulled a loaded Uzi submachine gun from his waistband as police chased him on foot was arrested Monday without incident.

The boy was spotted on a street in Richmond about 4 p.m. Monday by police officers. As the teen -- who had an outstanding no-bail warrant out on him -- ran away, officers saw him pull a machine gun from his waistband, Sgt. Nicole Abetkov told NBC Bay Area on Tuesday.

The boy ran into the nearby home of an acquaintance, where officers found him and the Uzi, Abetkov added.

Richmond Police Chief Chris Magnus tweeted that the teen had initially barricaded himself inside: “Loaded Uzis taken from 15yr/m by RPD Special Invest detectives this afternoon. Youth barricaded himself, but talked out. Impressive work.”

The end result for a similar confrontation was deadly for a 13-year-old boy in Santa Rosa who was fatally shot Oct. 22 by sheriff’s deputies who mistook the eighth-grader’s plastic gun for an AK-47. His parents filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Sonoma County last month, calling the shooting “a senseless and unwarranted act of police abuse.”

Police told NBC they don’t know how the Richmond teen, who was described as being uncooperative, acquired the Uzi. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and on the outstanding arrest warrant.

His name was being withheld because of his age.
