High school football player dies after collapsing in scrimmage
A 16-year-old high school football player in Riverside has died after collapsing during a scrimmage, officials said Wednesday.
Tyler Lewellen, who played at Arlington High School, died Tuesday night, Riverside Unified School District officials said in a statement.
Tyler had been hospitalized since Thursday, when he collapsed on the field during the scrimmage with Rubidoux High School.
“Tyler was a wonderful young man with a bright future ahead of him and everything to look forward to,” Arlington Principal Antonio Garcia said. “We are so saddened that he was suddenly taken from us.”
A crisis response team that includes psychologists was at the school Wednesday and met with students and teachers to help them cope with the tragedy, officials said.
