Storms cause power outages throughout the area
Amid the first major rainstorm of the year, 3,200 people in Los Angeles and others across the area are without power, officials said.
Palm fronds and other debris are falling on power lines. Among those affected are 1,900 people in the Fairfax area, 600 in Reseda, 250 in Sylmar and others in Hancock Park and Valley Glen, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Gale Harris said.
Many, she said, have been without power since early Saturday morning.
The power went out for more than 21,000 people in Riverside on Saturday because of lightning strikes, according to a release on the city’s website. Around 2:30 a.m., customers -- including a Kaiser hospital -- experienced a sudden loss of power.By 4:25 a.m. power was restored to the hospital, and by 8 a.m. power was restored to all remaining customers, according to the release.
Edison spokesman David Song said that Saturday afternoon, the company was working on restoring power for about 2,400 customers scattered across Los Angeles County, including 700 in Long Beach.
Even when lightning isn’t an issue, the first major storm of a year can result in more power outages because it’s more likely that power lines will be hit with debris that has been accruing.
