Strong winds expected through the weekend in Los Angeles area

Gusty winds from the north that could produce hazardous driving conditions are expected through the weekend in the Los Angeles area.

Wind gusts could reach up to 80 mph in the Santa Monica, Ventura and Los Angeles mountains over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

The strongest winds are expected Sunday evening and Monday, said Scott Sukup, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

In the Santa Clarita Valley and west San Fernando Valley, gusts could reach up to 70 mph Sunday night into Monday, Sukup said.

The National Weather Service warned of the possibility of power outages, downed trees and power lines. Hazardous driving conditions could occur on Interstate 5 through the Los Angeles mountain areas and U.S. 101 in Santa Barbara County.
