A silver Mercedes-Benz struck and killed a 19-year-old man Saturday night in Hyde Park, and the driver sped off without stopping to check the victim’s condition, Los Angeles police said.

The victim was walking eastbound across Crenshaw Boulevard, near the intersection of 78th Place, when the Mercedes struck him, police said. The collision occurred at about 6:15 p.m.

The victim was taken to UCLA Medical Center in Westwood where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Within an hour, the Mercedes was found abandoned about three miles from the accident scene, at Spinning Avenue and Imperial Highway in Inglewood, police said.

There was no description of the driver, police said, but the car had not been reported stolen, and officers hope the registration information will lead them to the driver.
