Woman found dead in Long Beach jail cell

Share

A woman in her 40s was found dead in a Long Beach jail cell early Friday morning, the third person to die in the custody of Long Beach police in the last two months.

The woman had come to police headquarters Thursday afternoon “yelling and screaming,” and told officers she wanted to come inside, according to Long Beach Police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt. After a routine warrant check, Pratt said, she was arrested and booked for outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

During a bed-check this morning, jail staff attempted to deliver her breakfast, but found her unresponsive. The jail called for a doctor, who pronounced her dead at the scene, Pratt said.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification of her family, but she is believed to be a Long Beach resident.

As a standard procedure for in-custody deaths, her death is being investigated by Long Beach Police homicide detectives and the L.A. County coroner’s office.

Two other in-custody deaths have occurred in Long Beach in the last two months. In April, a 50-year-old woman arrested on a narcotics charge died in a holding cell at the jail after going into medical distress. In late May, a man who also suffered medical distress died after being transported to a local hospital.
